Prevalence and Sociodemographic Profile of People with Non-communicable Diseases in Rural Puducherry

Abstract


Background: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are the most important worldwide problem. The World Health
Organization (WHO), of the 56 million global deaths in 2012, 38 million, or 68%, was due to NCDs. The global status report
on NCDs in 2010 showed that NCDs are the highest leading cause of death over the developed and developing countries.
More than 36 million people died from NCDs in 2008 from cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) (48%), cancers (21%), chronic
respiratory diseases (12%), and diabetes (3%). The major risk factors associated with NCDs are tobacco use, alcohol use,
physical inactivity, obesity, and raised blood pressure. Methods: A cross-sectional study carried out among 1045 rural
population in rural field practice area of the Department of Community Medicine, Aarupadai Veedu Medical College and
Hospital, Puducherry. The objectives of the study were to estimate the prevalence of risk factors for NCDs among the
population in rural areas of Puducherry. Data were analyzed using the SPSS version 20.0 software. Results: Among the
1045 people who were studied, majority were in the age group of 18-70 years (Mean age: 45 +/-18.7 years). Majority (35%)
were more than 60 years of age. In this study, 648 of the participants were male and 397 were female. In relation to residence
area, 531 (50.8%) were Manapet people and 514 (49.2%) were Chinnakanganakuppam people. The risk factors of physical
inactivity, hypertension, overweight/obesity, smoking, risky alcohol consumption, diabetes, hypertension, thyroid, asthma,
stroke, and CVD were investigated. Conclusions: It concluded that the prevalence and risk factors of NCDs are high. It is
required to reduce the trouble for rising NCD in the society. It is suggests that on focusing of interventions to prevent and
control the non-communicable diseases.
